Skateboarding Tips – Need To Know Stuff If You’re New To The Sport   by Antigua Resler

Skateboarders who know what they’re doing make it all look incredibly easy. Right? Just looks like you push-off and then find your balance. Hey, surfing looks like a no-brainer. Stand-up on a board, on a wave. But if you try it, you’ll immediately discover skateboarding only “looks” easy. Takes practice and definite skills if you’re dreaming of skating the expert tricks. What follows are some expert tips to decrease your learning time and increase your potential.

You need to have the right stuff – equipment. It can feel awkward to wear the safety gear: elbow/knee pads, helmut, shin guards. However, if you’re really new to the sport, very quickly you’ll be happy for wearing that gear. If you’re totally new, remember: falling time will be greater than skating time. Ok? Learning how to stop yourself will be the one thing that may produce more bruises and scrapes for you. After a while, you may want to take off your protective/safety equipment. But the helmut is still advisable to wear. You’ll really want to protect your head in case anything happens and you fall.

Don’t worry about going slow. A lot of new skaters attempt the tricks before they have the right skills. Most of the time this only causes discouragement, frustration, and injuries. Being able to skate down the street without falling doesn’t mean you have the right skills to execute tricks. Even a simple hop on that board is harder than it looks. Skate steadily and go slowly, then ride for long distances. Learn to start fast and stopping the right way without any falls. If you can skate long distances, smoothly, and can avoid hitting other people on the streets, then it’s cool to start thinking about trying some tricks.

Learn the terminology and do your homework on the different types of boards. You’ll find lots of different kinds of boards, they’re not all identical. Learn the differences between the boards and what each board is designed for. Know what other boarders are talking about when they use certain words. If you do that you’ll be able to ask for and get help with something.

You know there’s more to skating than standing and riding a flat piece of board. Skateboards are a valid way to travel short distances like going to work in the cities, and they’re really fun to ride. The trick to becoming a really good skateboarder is to be open to learning.
